Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is the use of special contact lenses that are quite different from traditional contacts lenses. Traditional contacts are worn during the day and removed at night when you go to sleep. It is the opposite with Ortho-K. You wear these lenses at night and remove them in the morning. Ortho-K lenses allow you to see without needing glasses or contacts. At OrthoK Plus in South Jordan, UT, we can determine if these lenses are right for you.

How Do Ortho-K Lenses Work?

Ortho-K lenses are worn at night. While you sleep, the lenses gently reshape your cornea to correct any refractive error you have, like nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ortho-K?

To be a good candidate for these lenses, your prescription must range from +2.00 to -6.00. If you have astigmatism, your prescription can be no higher than -1.75.

If you have dry eye, it can be difficult to wear conventional contact lenses. Conventional lenses absorb the moisture from your eyes, making your symptoms worse. Since Ortho-K lenses are worn while you sleep, when your eyes are closed, they won't make your symptoms worse.

Finally, if you are a poor candidate for Lasik due to a health condition or eye disease, Ortho-K contacts are an excellent alternative.

How Long Before Ortho-K Lenses Have the Maximum Effect?

The length of time it takes for your Ortho-K lenses to have the maximum effect depends on your prescription. If your prescription is low, it can take two to three nights before you can stop relying on your glasses or contacts. If you have a high prescription, it can take up to two weeks to achieve the maximum effect.

How Long Do the Effects of Ortho-K Last?

If you wear your contacts every night, you should never need to rely on your glasses or contacts. If you forget to wear the contacts for two or three nights, you will need to wear your glasses or contacts during the day until the contacts have their maximum effect again.

How Often Will I Need a New Pair of Contacts?

If you care for your Ortho-K contacts correctly, you can get two years use out of one pair. Without proper care, you may need to replace your contacts every year.
